The town of San Miguel Cuevas is located in the
Mixtecan region of Oaxaca, Mexico; however, due to
migrations in search of work, the majority of
community’s population now moves between San
Miguel Cuevas, other parts of Mexico, and the USA.
Although the community is geographically dispersed,
with a large majority living in Fresno County,
California, many members continue to practice their
traditions and retain strong ties to their pueblo. For
these reasons, San Miguel Cuevas has become a
transnational community, in that it finds itself living
across borders in many senses.

The new generations of San Miguel Cuevas are being
born and growing up in the USA. Due to this, the
community currently finds itself living an important
moment of change. It is essential that the rest of the
community listens to the voices of its youth, takes
them into account, and discusses them, as the
community’s future lies in their hands.

The place of my dreams

This project has been developed for these reasons, by youth living in Oaxaca and
California, and consists of two photo exhibitions and the creation of this internet
site. The project aspires to create and reproduce spaces for dialogue between
different community members; both between the older and younger generations,
and between youth from the same community, who live diverse lives in different
places.
